the forbidden city

In the middle of Beijing, across from the famous Tienanmen Square, lies a massive Chinese national treasure, the Forbidden City complex.

Honestly, even though I rented an audio guide, I didn’t actually absorb that much of the history behind this place when I went to visit. I was too focused on the architecture and exhibits, so unfortunately I won’t be able to recount many historical facts. I do know that construction began in the early 1400′s and the palace was used by Chinese emperors until the 1900′s, so a lot of history has happened between these walls.

The Forbidden City is a huge palatial compound and you can easily spend a whole day here if you really take your time walking around.

Some of the smaller buildings have been decorated with furniture that depicts what kinds of furnishings may have been used when the palace was occupied.

There are also several small museums located throughout the Forbidden city, which house all kinds of cool stuff.

The effort it took to intricately carve this giant piece of jade is amazing!

If I were an empress this would definitely be my crown.
